LUCKNOW: A musical tribute was paid to the 'Queen of Thumri' Padma Vibhushan Vidushi Girija Devi at an event Pushpanjali organised by the UP Sangeet Natak Akademi and the culture department on Monday.

Girija Devi was a classical singer of the Seniya and Banaras gharanas. She performed classical and light classical music and helped elevate the profile of thumri. She is called the 'Queen of Thumri' for her contribution in the genre.

Chief guest Padma Shri Malini Awasthi recalled memories of her guru whom she lovingly called as 'appa' while addressing the audience.

"Girija Deviji was like a star who has established the music of Banaras gharana in the entire world. My foundation 'Sonchiraiya' was established with her blessings.

I shared my idea of making an organization which can support the folk arts of the country. At the same time, I requested her to be the president of the foundation. Hearing this she instantly agreed and remained life-time president. Even if she is not physically present among us, her work will always remain eternal," said Awasthi.
