‘Obesity, diabetes behind rising high-risk pregnancies’
Lucknow: With caesarean deliveries rising sharply, the focus must remain on ensuring safe outcomes for both mother and child rather than debating modes of delivery, said Amit Kumar Ghosh, additional chief secretary, medical health and family welfare, at the ‘Art of Birthing Conclave’ organised by the Federation of Obstetric and Gynaecological Societies of India (FOGSI) at the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Scientific Convention Centre on Friday.
More than 500 delegates, including professors, doctors, nursing officers, midwives and maternal health specialists, attended the conclave, which was supported by organisations such as UNICEF, UNFPA India and Jhpiego.
The event featured scientific sessions on maternity care, facility readiness and natural birthing, along with hands-on training in managing postpartum haemorrhage and newborn resuscitation.
Ghosh said caesarean rates increased largely due to high-risk conditions such as anaemia, obesity, hypertension and diabetes. “Reducing maternal and neonatal mortality depends on timely intervention, improved antenatal care and institutional deliveries,” he said.
Organising chairperson Dr Preeti Kumar said the conclave aims to strengthen the skills of frontline healthcare workers through hands-on training and exposure to global best practices.
FOGSI president Dr Bhaskar Pal said the organisation is prioritising safe and dignified deliveries, particularly in the context of rising high-risk pregnancies.
Organising secretary Prof Seema Mehrotra said the programme focuses on improving practical proficiency in labour management, postpartum care and neonatal health.
