Smart meters pass across state accuracy checks: UPPCL
Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (UPPCL) has said smart meters installed across the state are functioning properly and recording electricity consumption accurately. To verify their performance, the corporation is conducting a statewide meter comparison campaign that began on May 1 and will continue till May 31.
According to UPPCL, around 89 lakh smart meters have been installed in UP so far. Under the prescribed installation guidelines, it is mandatory to retain check meters in five per cent of consumer premises. Following this norm, nearly 5 lakh old electronic meters were retained as check meters alongside newly installed smart meters.
As part of the verification drive, readings from the new smart meters are being matched with those of the older electronic check meters. So far, meter readings have been compared at 31,244 consumer premises across the state. The exercise covered 2,023 premises in Purvanchal, 2,725 in Madhyanchal, 6,038 in Dakshinanchal, 19,440 in Paschimanchal and 1,018 in KESCO areas. UPPCL said all smart meters tested were found to be fully compliant with prescribed standards.
UPPCL director commercial Prashant Verma said introduction of smart meters marks significant transition in state’s power sector. He said smart metering is designed to meet future requirements, offering digital platforms for grievance redressal and ensuring transparent billing.
He added that smart meters eliminate human intervention in billing, resulting in regular and error-free electricity bills for consumers. The technology also allows users to track daily power consumption, helping them manage usage more efficiently.
UPPCL officials said every bill generated through smart meters is based strictly on actual energy consumption.
