LUCKNOW: For over a month now, street lights on Shaheed Smarak Road - from
Chhatar Manzil
to the Convention Centre - have not been working.
Being one of the prominent roads of the city that joins trans-Gomti area to cis-Gomti, the stretch sees heavy vehicular movement every day. Also, due to its proximity to
Kaiserbagh
bus station, many inter-city buses take this route so it should be well lit at all hours.
"For the past month, we avoid taking this stretch because it remains pitch dark," said

, a resident of Rajajipuram. Deepak, a pan vendor on the stretch, said, "Every second day, minor accidents happen here, mostly at the spots where Residency lane and
Riverbank
road meet the main road respectively because visibility is almost nil. Two days ago, a biker collided with an e-rickshaw coming from the other side."
Add to this an early sunset and late sunrise due to winters and lack of streetlights leads to frequent traffic congestion. "The road sees heavy traffic during evening. Because of lack of illumination, vehicles move slowly leading to a jam-like situation. The time required to cross the stretch has increased ever since the street lamps went out of order," said

Binno Rizvi, LMC's zonal in charge, said, "We were not aware of this. We haven't got any complaints either. Now that I know there's a problem, I will make sure it is fixed as soon as possible."
