UP fixes 4% quota in govt jobs for people with disabilities
Lucknow: People with disabilities are set to have a better opportunity to secure govt jobs with the state govt deciding to reserve 4% positions for them, as mandated under the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016. Suitable positions for individuals with disabilities such as blindness and low vision, deaf and hard of hearing, locomotor disability including cerebral palsy, leprosy cured, dwarfism, muscular dystrophy, acid attack victims, autism, intellectual disability, specific learning disability, among other categories, have been identified across all the govt departments of UP.The department of empowerment of persons with disability in UP has sought the details of such people who are presently working for the public sector. Principal secretary of the department, Subhash Chandra Sharma said, "Recently, the committee constituted by the govt to identify positions which could be offered to people with disabilities shortlisted 24 kinds of job profiles in four govt departments (technical education, secretariat administration, prison administration and revenue departments). We have conducted similar exercises with other departments in the past. The positions will be floated through advertisement when the next recruitment drive takes place and 4% reservation will be offered."According to Census 2011, UP has a population of about 41.58 lakh people with disabilities. However, among them, close to 23 lakh people who possess UDID cards (Unique Disability Identity Card) are currently registered with the department. "The remaining could not produce necessary documents or have more income than what has been stipulated to provide benefits to the differently abled group," said a senior officer. In another step that will benefit the target group, the department will approach the higher education department to ensure 5% reservation is provided to such students in govt-run and aided institutes. The upper age limit to be eligible for admission in various courses also needs to be relaxed by five years for such candidates. Another officer added that for the post of lekhpal, the candidature of individuals who are hard of hearing, leprosy cured, acid attack victims, muscular dystrophy, one-arm, one-leg and dwarfism will be considered.
