Kanpur: A woman and her daughter were run over by a speeding car near Etawah on the Agra-Lucknow Expressway on early Friday.
Police said the driver of a sleeper bus traveling from Siddharthnagar to Delhi had stopped on the expressway around 4am to let passengers take a break. Kusum, 50, and her daughter Anjali, 13, from Siddharthnagar district, got off the bus and started walking towards the main road when a car coming from behind hit them. They died on the spot.
Police sent the bodies to Uttar Pradesh Institute of Medical Sciences, Saifai, for autopsy and informed their family members.
The car driver was identified as Harsh Pandey of UP’s Fatehpur. He was arrested and his car was seized.
SHO Balrajsingh Bhati said initial investigations suggested the accident might have been averted if the bus driver had let passengers off at a toll plaza or another safe area. The accident disrupted traffic on the expressway for some time.
