Ludhiana: City-based shuttler Lakshay Sharma, 17, will represent India in the Badminton Asian Junior championship to be held between July 7 and July 16 at Yogyakarta, Indonesia.
Lakshay secured a place in the Indian squad in the singles category with number 1 rank. Earlier, Lakshay represented India in the sub-junior Asian championship under the singles and doubles category.
Lakshay secured a place in the Indian squad during trials conducted by the Badminton Association of India from June 4 to 7. His father Mangat Rai Sharma, who is a certified badminton coach said, “Lakshay gave his best during the trials to get into the India team for the Asian junior championship. He could not win a medal in the sub-junior Asian championship but this time, he is definitely looking for a medal.
Lakshay started playing badminton at the age of six. When he was seven, he won the under-10 state championship. At the age of 12, he won the under-17 state ranking tournament. At 16, he won the men's ranking tournament.
