RC renewal, fitness cert of vehicles to take longer

Ludhiana: Residents will now face delays in obtaining fitness certificates and renewing vehicle registration certificates as the local transport department has reduced the number of days it conducts vehicle inspections.The local transport department will inspect vehicles only three days a week. These three days will be Monday, Wednesday and Friday.Previously, the department was inspecting vehicles six days a week, to check if they are fit to ply on roads. The reduction in inspection days comes after one of Ludhiana’s two motor vehicle inspectors (MVIs) was transferred to another district. MVI Narinder Kumar, who was posted here, has been reassigned to Hoshiarpur.With only one MVI in Ludhiana, who also holds charge of assistant mechanical engineer (AME), roadways, in Jalandhar, the transport department has been forced to halve its inspection schedule, said an official.This decision is expected to cause inconvenience for residents who require fitness certificates for their vehicles or need to renew their vehicle registration certificate. These services are crucial for maintaining legal compliance and ensuring that vehicles on the road are safe and environmentally sound, the official said.A fitness certificate is a mandatory requirement for older commercial vehicles as it certifies that a vehicle is fit to be driven on the road. Without this certificate, vehicles are not permitted to operate, and owners can face fines or other penalties. Similarly, the renewal of vehicle registration certificate is also a mandatory document which ensures that a private vehicle is complying with safety and environmental norms.An official said Ludhiana is the biggest district of Punjab. Besides, it is also an industrial hub. The district has the highest number of vehicles in Punjab.“Now the shortage of MVIs will cause inconvenience to the local people and they will have to wait for their vehicle to be inspected,” he said.RTA Randeep Singh said: “We have already written to the state department seeking deployment of another motor vehicle inspector.”

Three more arrested for hitting policeman with vehicle

Angamaly police arrested three more individuals in connection with the incident where a policeman was struck by a car during a vehicle inspection at TB Junction. The suspects are identified as Arun Sibi, Amal, and Jofin John. Two others, Ajmal Subair and Rinshad, were previously arrested.
