Gadvasu comes up with new food items
Ludhiana: Fish lovers now have another option. Gadvasu has introduced a snack variety in shrimps which includes a battered stick and are ready to cook and be served as snacks. Speaking about the new invention Meera D Ansal, head of the college of fisheries said that the this was possible due to the increase in production of shrimps. “In three years shrimp farming has been increased from an acre to 370 acres , which is mainly done in saline water, the university has come up with various value added products and new eatables. Earlier, the shrimp pickle was one of the most in demand food item and now we are hoping the same response for this new food item,” added Ansal. Beside this, meat nuggets, meat loaf, meat patties, meat balls, meat pickle, meat waddi, meat matthi, chicken noodles, chicken biscuits, chicken and quail egg pickles are very popular. Extension education director H K Verma said, “Chicken Kurkure and chicken caruncle are new items in the plate. These are nutritious snacks-based meat product. They can be stored without refrigeration at room temperature for more than three months. The total protein content in the chicken kurkure ranges between 20-25%.”
Ghiya barfi
With 20% of the crushed bottle gourd with condensed milk, the ghiya ki barfi is another nutritious sweet at Gadvasu produces for the first time by department of diary. Nitika from the department said, “This is a seasonal vegetable, so can be manufactured on seasonal basis. Ghiya ki barfi can be prepared on festivals or eaten as a fruit diet on fasts. This is fibrous and nutritious. The barfi made in any way has its own distinct taste.”
Mats and gift wraps from Paddy straw
PAU’s department of Apparels and Textile Sciences College of Humanity Sciences has come up with mats made up of paddy straw. The department has three varieties, namely, mulch mat woven, mulch mat non-woven and printed.
The traditional straw mat that has served as flooring for many centuries can be made from the paddy straw. These mats have been so common in houses and a custom that has survived to this day and age can be taken forward. The soft covering of the floor mats is woven with paddy straw and blended with cotton and the very material that makes paddy woven and non woven so characteristically comfortable to sit, walk, and sleep on.
Giving details on fabrication, Dr Rajdeep Kaur, Assistant Scientist of the department said, “Interestingly, these mats are used also to curb weeds in the fruit crops, Vegetable crops and flower crops.In woven mat, the fibres of paddy straw is blended with cotton to get the yarn, which is further crafted for mats, wall hanging and many more .Besides this the thickness of the printed mats are used for decorative like gift wraps.’
