PATIALA: The accused in Morinda sacrilege incident who allegedly faced some breathing problem inside Mansa jail and died in Mansa hospital while undergoing treatment did not have any breathing problem or other related health issues, said police.
The police claimed that the accused had undergone medical examination four times during the period he remained in police custody and was declared fit before being sent to Mansa jail.
SP Navneet Singh Mahal said, "The accused did not have any breathing problem or other related health issues till he remained in the police custody and we got his medical examination conducted four times during the period, he stayed in our custody. Even his CT scan was done. During the four days police remand, he did not disclose anything concrete as we were investigating if he has committed the crime on behest on someone or the conspiracy behind it. The accused did not have any criminal case registered against him in the past".
Sources revealed that the accused Jasvir Singh alias Jassi was survived by his parents, a wife and around seven-year-old son however the family was staying at undisclosed place since the sacrilege incident as on the same evening their house was also ransacked.
On April 24, the accused Jasvir Singh had allegedly committed sacrilege at historical Gurdwara Kotwali Sahib in Morinda by pushing away Shri Guru Granth Sahib after assaulting two Granthis seated near it leaving their turbans tossed.
The CCTV footage of this incident had then gone viral over social media.
The accused was attacked by devotees who overpowered him during the occurrence of crime and then handed him over to the police but hours later the entire Morinda town was shut down due to protests held till next day at Morinda police station and other places by Sikh protestors seeking exemplary punishment.
The protestors also demanded from police to handover the accused to them. On the day of incident, some protestors also ransacked the house of sacrilege accused Jassi while his family was away.
The accused Jasvir Singh was booked under sections 295 A, 307, 323 and 506 IPC by Morinda police and a day after his arrest the accused was sent to two days police remand.
On April 27, the police got remand for two more days however while producing the accused before the Ropar court, a lawyer allegedly tried to attack sacrilege accused with a weapon in the court room but was overpowered by the police.
On April 27, the police though faced a lot of pressure from Ropar Bar Association, but registered a case in the midnight against the lawyer under sections of attempt to murder and arms act sections.
On April 29, the accused was sent to judicial custody by the court.
