Organs of brain dead man give new lease of life for seven patients in TN

MADURAI: The organs of a 35-year-old man from Ramanathapuram who was declared brain dead after a road accident were harvested and transplanted in seven patients.


N Sakthivel, 35, met with an accident on September 25. He was admitted to Meenakshi Mission Hospital in Madurai where doctors declared him to be brain dead on September 27.

The medical team explained Sakthivel's condition to his wife, who agreed for organ donation. Following approval from Tamil Nadu government authorities, the organs were harvested.

A kidney and the liver were transplanted in patients in the same hospital. Another kidney was sent to Kidney Care Centre in Tirunelveli. His eyes were donated to Aravind Eye Hospital, Madurai.

The heart lungs were airlifted to Chennai. The heart was transplanted in a patient in MGM Healthcare, and the lungs were transplanted in a patient in Apollo Hospitals.
