MADURAI: Sri Lankan navy arrested 15 fishermen from Rameswaram on charges of poaching in their territorial waters on Saturday night.
Two fishing trawlers of these fishermen were also taken into custody.
The two trawlers were among the 400 more trawlers which ventured on a fishing expedition on Saturday.
According to the Sri Lankan navy, it pressed two of their Fast Attack Crafts of the 4th Fast Attack Flotilla attached to Northern Naval Command after spotting a cluster of Indian trawlers fishing in Sri Lankan waters North off Talaimannar.
The crafts were deployed to chase away the Indian trawlers and two Indian trawlers were apprehended during the exercise.
"The seized trawlers along with 15 Indian fishermen were taken to Talaimannar naval base and were later handed over to Mannar Fisheries officials for onward legal proceedings," the navy said.
Ten days ago, Sri Lankan navy detained seven Indian fishermen and a trawler on charges of poaching in their territorial waters.
