Traders oppose Tidel park project at Mattuthavani

Madurai: The All Traders' Association of MGR Central Market submitted a petition to Madurai district collector M S Sangeetha on Monday, opposing the govt's plan to set up a Tidel park at Mattuthavani.
The foundation for the Tidel park is scheduled to be laid by chief minister M K Stalin on Tuesday via videoconferencing. The park is to be developed at 314 crore.
The petitioners, led by association's president Chinnamayan, raised concerns over the impact of the proposed project on local traders and the community. They highlighted regular traffic congestion at Mattuthavani, where flower, rice, fruit, and vegetable markets, along with omni, govt bus stands and Saravana Stores, are present. They expressed alarm at the govt's decision to establish the Tidel park in such a busy area.
The petition pointed out to a 2010 govt order which allocated land in Mattuthavani for a permanent vegetable market, ensuring better organisation and facilities.
Traders also raised concerns over the absence of basic facilities in the present temporary markets and the lack of a vehicle parking facility, further intensifying traffic bottlenecks. They urged the govt either to select an alternative location for the Tidel park or to invest in improving the existing markets. They also requested the govt to establish a permanent vegetable market at the designated location.
