Seminar on human rights on Nov 26

Mangaluru: As part of celebrating the 75th year of the adoption of the Indian Constitution, a state-level seminar on ‘Human Rights and Social Justice' will be held at Govindadasa College, Surathkal, on Nov 26.Prof Valerian Rodrigues, an international scholar of Dr Ambedkar and a former Professor at the Centre for Political Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, and Mangaluru University, will inaugurate the seminar and deliver the keynote address under the Justice Suresh Hosabettu Endowment.Jayachandra Hatwar H, chairman of the Hindu Vidyadaayini Sangha, will be the chief guest, and Prof Gopal M Gokhale, director of administration of the college, will be the guest of honour. Prof Krishmurthy P, the principal, will preside over the inaugural session of the seminar.In the first session, Reshma Ullal, an independent researcher will present a paper on ‘Human Rights and Gender Justice with Special Reference to Transgenders in India'. Dr Arundhati, a transgender social activist, will share her experiences.In the second session, Smitha C and Juvairiya Nasira will jointly present a paper on ‘Child Rights in India: Issues and Challenges'. Hitha Umesh will present a paper on ‘Women's Rights in India: Problems and Prospects'. Sushmitha will present a paper on ‘Narayana Guru and Social Justice', and Varshitha S will present a paper on ‘Human Rights and Environment: Key Issues'. Shama Farhana will moderate This session.Ashalatha P, convenor of the programme, said in a press release that the seminar is jointly organised by IQAC, Human Rights Forum, the humanities department, Consumer Rights Forum, and Mahila Vedike of the college.
