Mangaluru civic body logs record 149.6 crore property tax collection

Mangaluru: Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) has recorded its highest-ever property tax collection of Rs 149.6 crore under the Self-Assessment Scheme (SAS) in 2025-26, commissioner Ravichandra Naik said Friday.Addressing reporters, Naik said the projected demand for the financial year was Rs 112 crore. The MCC had collected Rs 137 crore in 2024-25 and Rs 117 crore in 2023-24, he said.The city, which has 60 wards, has a total of 2,22,256 properties. These include 1,75,724 residential units, 44,074 commercial properties, 1,175 industrial properties and 1,283 non-residential or non-commercial properties.Naik said property tax collections have increased over the years and would help the MCC take up development works.As part of efforts to improve collections, the MCC launched a pilot project in three wards — Attavar, Hampankatta and Padavu — by physically inspecting properties. Teams of MCC officials conducted field visits to verify properties and ensure tax compliance. Campaigns were also held to encourage timely payment of taxes, he said."Field visits helped the city corporation to verify the existence of properties, assess how many new properties have remained outside the property tax net and enable the corporation to bring such properties under the purview of taxation. Through a sample survey, which is in progress, an additional property tax amounting to Rs 55.3 lakh, including pending arrears and newly assessed properties, has been collected in the three wards," the commissioner said.Property owners can avail a 5% rebate on tax payments made on or before April 30, Naik said, appealing to citizens to pay their taxes within the deadline.To further boost revenue, the MCC will introduce QR codes on all advertisements to prevent misuse and ensure permission is obtained before mounting them. A software platform will also be developed to enable advertisers to book hoarding space and make online payments, he added.
