The bishop said initiatives including water harvesting and environment protection will be carried throughout next year. “Jesus Christ was born in a clean, serene and non-polluted environment. He taught his followers to be free from all types of uncleanliness and become pure both within and outside. The teachings of Jesus are relevant and even to this day,'' he said.

The initiatives have already been kick-started in the Bishop House premises, where a water harvesting system has been set up. Moreover, churches and institutes under the Diocese of Mangalore are instructed to take up water harvesting and other green initiatives seriously.

The bishop said he will send a circular to all parish priests and heads of institutions, requesting them to discourage others from burning fireworks during festivities and celebrations.

The diocese has also taken up the construction of St. Joseph Vaz Home — a home for retired priests of the diocese of Mangalore. The premises will be beautified by planting saplings of a variety of

fruits and vegetables

.

Msgr. Denis Prabhu, vicar General, chancellor Rev. Henry Sequiera, Fr. William Menezes PRO, M. P. Noronha, secretary diocesan pastoral parish and Marcel Monteiro, PRO were present when the bishop gave the speech.
