Meerut: After pictures of Bulandshahr SSP G Muniraj being felicitated by Kakod nagar panchayat chairman Kunwar Rizwan Khan, a co-accused in a rape case, went viral, chief minister Yogi Adityanath on Friday not only pulled up the senior cop, but also directed ADG (Meerut zone) Prashant Kumar to look into the matter.

According to officials, a few weeks ago, Kakod nagar panchayat had felicitated the SSP and Khan had presented him a memento. The rape case against Khan pertains to a year old matter in which the minor daughter of a local doctor was allegedly abducted and violated on April 27, 2017.

Since two different communities were involved in the case, it took communal colour, creating tension in the area. The girl was recovered a week later.

Speaking to TOI, Vimla Solanki, the Sikandrabad MLA who had arranged a meeting of the survivor with the CM during his visit to Bulandshahr on Friday, said, “Despite the fact that the girl had named Kunwar Rizwan Khan as one of the accused in her statement in court, police have not taken any steps to arrest him.”

Khan, on the other hand, refuted all charges. He said, “The case is politically motivated. The opposition party is playing vindictive politics to malign my reputation and unseat me. Even police, which are part of the state machinery, could not find any evidence against me. That is why I wasn’t arrested.”

Meanwhile, SSP Muniraj said, “The case is a year old and we had arrested the culprit and sent him to jail. Khan had obtained a stay order from the high court on his arrest. As far as the issue of me being felicitated by him is concerned, various trader organisations and others had invited us for felicitation due to police’s good work in the area.”

ADG (Meerut zone) Prashant Kumar said, “We are investigating the matter and will take appropriate action.”
