BIJNOR: Continuing their protest against police lathicharge in Hapur last week, lawyers in several districts conducted lathi puja on Tuesday. They also burned effigies of the Uttar Pradesh chief secretary and DGP.

The lawyers across the state continued their protest despite Allahabad HC Chief Justice Pritinker Diwaker's request for them to resume their work.

"Members from all the district bar associations across the state burned effigies as part of our protest against the unlawful act by police in Hapur. Our protest will continue and will intensify in the upcoming days as we have insisted on physical involvement by all the advocates and bar council members," said Shiv Kishor Gaur, president, Bar Council of Uttar Pradesh.

On Tuesday, the Uttar Pradesh government included retired judicial officer Hari Nath Pandey as a member of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) constituted to look into the lathicharge incident, following directions from the Allahabad High Court.

"Till now, no actions have been taken by the government. The SP and DM have not been transferred and the responsible cops are not suspended. If there will be police officers in the SIT, we do not expect a fair probe," Gaur added.

Meanwhile, in an apparent show of strength, lawyers in Bijnor also conducted a protest march through the city, holding batons in their hands.

The agitators also disrupted traffic on the Delhi-Pauri national highway for one and a half hours.
