MUMBAI : Two men employed as ward boys at a hospital in south Mumbai have been arrested by the crime branch of the city police for allegedly snatching a bag with Rs 10 lakh from a senior citizen in Tardeo earlier this week.

The accused have been identified as Chaitanya Desai (25) and Rajiv Valmiki (40). The police said they have recovered the stolen cash and have handed over the two to officials of Tardeo police station for further probe.

On Tuesday, the senior citizen, Vijay Gandhi (70), who works for a private company, was on his way to hand over cash to a client. He was at a bus stop when the two accused cornered him, claiming they were CBI officers.

“They said they wanted to check his bag and asked him to accompany them. On the way, they pushed the elderly man, snatched his bag containing the cash and fled on a bike,” said police inspector Sopan Kakad.
Gandhi lodged a complaint at Tardeo police station and gave a description of the two accused. The crimebranch unit 3 was conducting a parallel probe. Based on CCTV footage, police identified the two as ward boys of a hospital in south Mumbai. They were summoned and quizzed and they confessed to the crime, said an officer.

The police said that the two have said they had learnt about Gandhi who used to ferry cash and other valuables. The probe was carried out by sub-inspector Arif Patel, Ashok Rane and constables Ganesh Goregaonkar, Arun Ghatkar and other officials. The police have informed the hospital where the two work.
