MUMBAI: A 26-year-old student who was about travel to Toronto for postgraduation studies was caught with two passports — an Indian and a Bangladeshi— at the city airport last week, reports V Narayan. Immigration authorities initially detained Subramanium Mallik after becoming suspicious on noticing that he had made multiple trips to Bangladesh using the Indian passport.
“He was unable to give a satisfactory reply on the purpose of his frequent visits to Bangladesh,” special branch constable R M Salunke stated in the police complaint. Further probe revealed he is a Bangladesh national.
A police source said Mallik had crossed into India in 2009 when he was 11. He lived in West Bengal, where he eventually acquired a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Kolkata. In 2021, he illicitly procured an Indian passport using an Aadhaar and PAN.
He used the same to obtain a student visa for Canada for studies. Immigration officials also found a copy of his Bangladeshi birth certificate on his phone.
