BMC Elections 2026: BJP-Shiv Sena alliance on top, Mumbai set for a new mayor after 4 year delay

BJP emerges as single largest party in Mumbai

Early trends from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections show the BJP leading in 98 seats, making it the single largest party in the 227-ward civic body.

BJP-Shiv Sena alliance strong in BMC

The BJP-Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) alliance leads in a total of 128 wards, with Shiv Sena on its own leading in 30 seats, consolidating the Mahayuti’s position in Mumbai.

Opposition alliance struggles

The Shiv Sena (UBT)-MNS-NCP(SP) alliance appears stalled, leading in only 68 wards. Within the alliance, UBT leads in 59, MNS in 9, while NCP(SP) has not secured a lead in any seat.

The Ajit Pawar-led NCP has not opened its account in Mumbai, while Congress is leading in 14 seats. Its alliance partner, Vanchit Bahujan Aaghadi (VBA), is yet to make a mark in the civic polls.

Across 28 municipal corporations in Maharashtra, BJP has put up a commanding performance, leading in key civic bodies such as Nagpur, Pune, Thane, Nashik, and Shambhajinagar.

In Nagpur Municipal Corporation, BJP is leading in 113 out of 151 seats, while Congress trails significantly with leads in only 30 wards, indicating a major urban stronghold for the party.

BJP leads in 90 wards of Pune Municipal Corporation. The NCP-led alliance struggles with just 20 wards, while the Congress-UBT combine manages only 10 seats, showing limited traction.

Thane Municipal Corporation

In Thane’s 131 wards, BJP continues as the single largest party with leads in 29 seats. The Ajit Pawar NCP secured 4, and the UBT-MNS-NCP(SP) alliance collectively led in just 5 seats.

In Jalgaon, members of the Kolhe family—Lalit Kolhe, Sindhutai Kolhe, and Piyush Lalit Kolhe—celebrated emotional victories after each secured a win in the Jalgaon Municipal Corporation elections.

Significance of the 2026 Mumbai civic polls

These elections were conducted after a gap of eight years, with the previous BMC elections held in 2017. The term of the last mayor, Kishori Pednekar, ended in March 2022, and Mumbai is set to get a new mayor after nearly four years.
