BMC mayor race heats up: CM Devendra Fadnavis in Davos, talks on hold, poll process set to last till Jan-end
MUMBAI: With the chief minister leaving for Davos to attend the World Economic Forum and the date for a lottery to decide whether the mayor's post goes to the open category, SC/ST, OBC or women likely in the next few days, discussions for power-sharing in the BMC are expected to extend through the month.
A lottery for the Mayor's post will be held on Jan 22, said sources. Once the category is determined, a notification will be issued the same day or the next day. However, a seven-day notice has to be issued thereafter for the elections. "If the notification is issued on Jan 22 then the mayoral election will be held on Jan 29 or 30. If it is issued on Jan 23, elections will be held on Jan 30/31," said sources.
CM Fadnavis left for Davos to attend the World Economic Forum on Sunday. He'll be back on Jan 24.Earlier, Fadnavis said he, Shinde and other leaders will decide the mayor. He was responding to Sena (UBT) spokesperson Sanjay Raut 's comment that "God willing" it could be a Sena mayor. On a sarcastic note, he said he did not know if Raut was referring to God above or to him since he is also called "Devabhau."
The WEF’s 56th annual meeting is from Jan 19-23, bringing together nearly 3,000 leaders from over 130 countries. CM Devendra Fadnavis on arrival interacted with the Marathi people there. He will be in Davos till January 24.
Fadnavis said WEF 2026 will play an important role in moving Maharashtra towards a $1 trillion economy. Last year, Maharashtra signed investment agreements worth Rs 16 lakh crore and this year, govt is targeting more investments.
The CM is accompanied by industries minister Uday Samant and senior officials. At the Davos meet, special emphasis will be placed on attracting FDI, industrial projects capable of job generation and development through discussions with global industry groups, investors and policy makers, said a press release.
Addressing the Indian diaspora in Zurich, Fadnavis said the BJP-led govt has transformed Mumbai.
