Byculla Cable-Stayed Flyover — How Mumbai’s Rs 805-Crore Project Will Decongest Traffic Between Lalbaug and Mazgaon

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has unveiled a ₹805-crore cable-stayed flyover project to connect the Y-Bridge at Byculla with JJ Flyover.
Planned to ease congestion in the dense Lalbaug–Mazgaon corridor, this ambitious link will be one of South Mumbai’s most significant infrastructure upgrades in years.

The project includes two new approach arms that will directly connect Olivant Bridge in Mazgaon with the Eastern Freeway. Once operational, motorists traveling from Byculla and Lalbaug will be able to bypass key choke points and enjoy smoother, faster access to south and central Mumbai.

Spanning 1,182 metres in total, the Byculla Cable-Stayed Flyover will include a striking 230-metre cable-stayed section as its centerpiece. Designed for high-capacity traffic movement, it will link major city arteries and reduce travel time during peak commuting hours.

The plan features a 312-metre viaduct towards JJ Flyover, and two more stretches—290 metres on the west and 350 metres on the east near the Y-Bridge. These new lanes and ramps will improve access between key junctions, easing bottlenecks at Richardson and Cruddas Road.

The flyover will incorporate stainless steel girders, rigid pavements, and reinforced ramps designed to handle high daily vehicle loads. This combination of durability and design will ensure a longer lifespan, reduced maintenance, and improved safety for thousands of commuters every day.

Beyond the main structure, the project will add supporting urban features such as new drainage lines, noise barriers, and road furniture. These improvements aim to enhance driving comfort, pedestrian safety, and overall environmental quality along the entire stretch.

BMC officials have assured that detailed traffic diversion plans will be implemented in coordination with the Mumbai Traffic Police. The goal is to minimize disruption to daily commuters while maintaining accessibility across Lalbaug, Mazgaon, and Byculla during the build phase.

The estimated construction period is 18 months, though the final schedule is yet to be confirmed. Once completed, the Byculla Cable-Stayed Flyover will stand as a symbol of Mumbai’s next-generation infrastructure—linking heritage precincts with modern engineering. (All photo credits: AI)
