Fake army officer, brother cheat city businessman of Rs 40k, held

MUMBAI: The Agripada police on Saturday arrested two brothers for allegedly

cheating

a Mumbai businessman by promising to sell him a phone online. One of the accused, Sabir Shaikh, claimed that he was an army officer. Sabir and his brother Shakir are originally from Rajasthan .

A police officer said that the duo was lodged in a jail in Nagaland for another crime. "On learning that they were lodged there, our team went there and took their custody," said the officer. The brothers, who were produced at the Esplanade court on Sunday, have been sent to police custody. They have been booked for cheating under the IPC and also under the Information Technology Act.

The police said that the complainant, Nisar Khan, had received a call from the Nagaland police inquiring about his deal with the brothers. This is when Khan realised that he had been cheated and approached the Agripada police to lodge a cheating complaint.

Sabir claimed he was army officer Vikram Waghmare. He agreed to sell his phone through the portal for Rs 42,000 and later, the rate was fixed at Rs 40,000. Khan was told to transfer the money to a third person's bank account.
