FYJC arts, commerce cut-offs jump by up to 5%
MUMBAI: Higher number of applicants with more than 90% caused
St Xavier’s College, Fort, the most popular among arts students, closed its first list for open category
In the first merit list for junior colleges announced on Thursday, 1.2 lakh students were allotted a seat in one of 10 colleges they had selected. This year, 35,787 students secured admission in the college they listed as top preference. These students must secure admission in this college.
“Over the past few years, students with even high scores are opting for arts. So the increase is not only related to more students scoring above 90% but also the popularity of the arts stream,” said Vidyadhar Joshi, vice-principal, VG Vaze College.
Commerce cut-offs also saw a jump. At NM College, the first list closed at 94.2%, as opposed to 91.8% last year. Principal Parag Ajagaonkar said, “Our top ranker scored 98.8% and five other top rankers scored above 98%.”
Colleges saw their top-scorers on the merit list to be above 95% for commerce and science, and above 90% for arts. KC College principal Hemalata Bagla said, “Some students who scored 97% have applied for science, students with 95% have applied for commerce and students with 93.6% for Arts. As predicted, there were a lot of applicants for arts, compared to last year.”
With seats outnumbering applicants, principals felt students must not lose hope. “There is always a second list. But students should take care while filling up preferences during college
Students have until July 9 to confirm admissions. “Junior colleges will upload details of admissions they conducted under various quotas. These seats and students will be out of the system for the second round,” said an education department official.
The department saw a stream of students with complaints about colleges allotted on Thursday. “I had opted for science but now want commerce. But I have been allotted my first preference and hence can’t change the college,” said a student.
