MUMBAI: Concerned that vacancies in the Maharashtra Administrative Tribunal (MAT) were not being filled, the Bombay high court on Wednesday sought action from the Centre to look into the issue on a priority basis.
The bench of acting Chief Justice Nitin Jamdar and Justice Arif Doctor in an order passed in a PIL said: “Considering the importance of the tribunal and the situation resulting from non-filling of the vacancies, which is extremely prejudicial to the litigants, the joint secretary, government of India, would look into the issue on priority basis and will consider taking necessary steps at the earliest.”
The high court sought a progress report from the Centre on the issuance of appointment orders before the next hearing on August 1.
The public interest litigation was filed by K V Mahamuni and there was an application by advocate Y P Morbale over the functioning of the MAT, vacant posts and other issues, including lack of funds resulting in inadequate functional computers and technicians.
The tribunal in a reply said the process for appointments was on.
