In the past four years, 20,000 tourists have toured the historic building of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) headquarters
MUMBAI: Around 20,000 tourists from Mumbai and around the world have toured the historic BMC headquarters building from January 2021 to July 2025.
The tours are organised jointly by the BMC, MTDC, and Khaki Tours every Saturday and Sunday.Although the first meeting of the BMC was held on September 4, 1873, the current main building of the headquarters began operations on January 16, 1893.
Since then, the municipal corporation has been effectively overseeing Mumbai's governance in the magnificent building, constructed in the Indo-Saracenic architectural style.
The design of the municipal headquarters was created by the renowned architect of the time, SW Stevens, and the construction was completed on July 31, 1893.
The BMC building is a testament to the city's civic service and development.A total of six tours of the building are conducted every Saturday and Sunday. On Sunday, July 20, 2025, the tour welcomed its 20,000th tourist.
During these tours, information about Mumbai's development stories, the rich history of the corporation, and the architectural detail of this grand building is provided.
