ISC sees marked jump in 90-plus category; high numbers may impact admission to top colleges

Mumbai: A student from Jamnabai Narsee School, Annanya Desai, has bagged the perfect 100% in the ISC (Class 12) results announced on Thursday. Of the 1.03 lakh students who took the board exams from Maharashtra, 99.88% cleared it. The state's success rate is slightly above the national average of 99.13%.A sharp jump in high scorers marked this year's ISC results in the state, with the number of students scoring 95% and above climbing from 499 to 745, almost a 50% jump, underscoring a strong shift at the top end of performance. The ones scoring 90% and above increased from 1,211 last year to 1,597 this year—up 31.9%. The high scorers from the board are likely to impact admissions in some of the popular courses in top colleges.Nationally, girls continued to outperform boys, recording a pass percentage of 99.48% compared to 98.81% for boys. Region-wise, the southern region led the overall performance, followed by the western and northern regions.At Bombay Scottish School, the results were driven by a strong cluster of high achievers, with 109 out of 151 students (72%) scoring more than 90%. Principal Sunita George said this marked a clear improvement over last year, when the figure stood at 63%. "We have also recorded more 100s across subjects this year," she said. She noted Physics, considered one of the more challenging papers, still saw strong outcomes, with 10 out of 14 students scoring full marks.At Jamnabai Narsee School, principal Sonali Gandhi said the results reflected both consistency and improvement across the batch, with several students achieving top scores in multiple subjects. She highlighted strong performance in Mass Media, where high scorers secured cent per cent marks. "The results reflect a clear shift towards concept-based learning rather than rote learning," she said, calling the overall outcome "very heartening".Principals said the results reflected a clear shift away from rote-based preparation towards application-driven understanding. Gandhi said students were increasingly focusing on conceptual clarity rather than memorisation, which was reflected in consistent performance across both core and elective subjects.At Sulochanadevi Singhania School in Thane, director of education and principal Revathi Srinivasan noted a particularly strong performance in English this year, with students securing perfect 100 scores in the subject for the first time. "Overall, the results have been very good this year," the principal said.Principals also pointed to stronger outcomes in newly introduced subjects, which they said contributed to the overall top-end performance, including Mass Media. "Many students have reached the 100% mark in these newer subjects," a principal said. Artificial Intelligence was another subject that saw notably high performance across student groups. George said, "AI as a subject was introduced just last year, but this time the results have been phenomenal, with a few high performers making a perfect score."
