Maharashtra Bhushan 2023 awarded to Ashok Saraf

Mumbai: Chief minister Eknath Shinde on Tuesday announced that the Maharashtra Bhushan 2023, state’s highest civilian award, had been awarded to veteran Marathi film and theatre actor Ashok Saraf for his contribution to the field of arts.
Saraf (75), is a household name thanks to his multiple hit movies like Gammat Jammat, Ashi Hi Banwa Banwi, Dhoom Dhadaka, Balache Baap Brahmachari, Bin Kamacha Navra and Majha Pati Karodpati. Many of his films also featured other heroes like Sachin Pilgaonkar or Laxmikant Berde. His appearances in Hindi cinema evoke mirth as well.
The actor told media persons, “I am extremely happy to receive this award that puts me in the august league of achievers like (former winner) P L Deshpande. It is an acknowledgement that the state has recognised my 50 years of hard work in the industry.” Congratulating him, CM Shinde said that the artist has excelled not only at comedy but also in serious and occasionally villainous roles, and has ruled over his fans.
The award comprises a medal, citation and Rs 25 lakh. Last year, the state government increased the honorarium or prize money for awardees from Rs 10 lakh to Rs 25 lakh.
Social worker and reformer ‘Nirupankar’ Dattatreya Narayan Dharmadhikari, popularly known as Appasaheb Dharmadhikari was bestowed with the Maharashtra Bhushan Award 2022. Union home minister Amit Shah had conferred the award to Dharmadhikari at Kharghar. Legendary playback singer Asha Bhosle was conferred the award for 2021.
