Motorcycle rider, friend killed after bring hit by tanker at Borivali
MUMBAI: A 25-year-old motorcycle rider and his female friend seated pillion lost their lives after a chemical tanker rammed into their two-wheeler on the Western Express Highway at Borivali East on Sunday. The driver of the tanker fled from the crash location but later surrendered at the Kasturba Marg Police station.
Around 2.15 pm on Sunday, police personnel were alerted about congestion building up on National Park flyover on WEH. A police team went to the location and found out that a chemical tanker had rammed into a motorcycle. Rahul Krishnan, the motorcycle rider, and his friend, Jaya Pande, 24, who was seated pillion, suffered grievous injuries in the crash. Before the police arrived, bystanders had flagged down an ambulance and sent the two to Orbit Hospital at Mira Road. Police said they recovered a mobilephone and a few belongings of the injured individuals from the crash location. Around 50 metres from the crash location, police found the chemical tanker abandoned. The rear side of the motorcycle was mangled while a bumper on the front left side of the tanker was damaged. After quizzing witnesses, police concluded that the tanker had rammed the motorcycle from its rear side.
Krishnan and Pande were moved to Bhimsen Joshi General Hospital at Bhayander where they succumbed to their injuries. Krishnan and Pande were childhood friends and were both based out of Bhayander. Their families told the police that Pande , accompanied by Krishnan, had visited a friend in Dahisar to give her a dress. The crash occurred after they had left from Dahisar. Their families did not know where were the duo going thereafter. Krishnan had been wearing a helmet but the police said they couldn't find it.
Tanker driver Ajmal Ansari, 42, surrendered at the Kasturba Marg police station and was arrested on charges of rash driving and culpable homicide not amounting to murder.
