MU senate polls: HC junks lawyer’s petition against fresh voter list

Mumbai: The Bombay high court on Monday dismissed a petition by a lawyer challenging Mumbai University’s decision to invite fresh applications for voters’ registration for senate elections for 10 seats of Graduates’ constituency and announcing the tentative date of election as April 21, 2024.
The MU senate elections are pending for over a year and locked in controversy between youth leaders of Yuva Sena and NCP students’ wing. A division bench of Justices Atul Chandurkar and Jitendra Jain dismissed a petition by prospective candidate, advocate Sagar Devre, who sought directions to MU to declare the election schedule within two weeks and to base it on an earlier list of 90,000 voters.
Senior counsel A Y Sakhare for MU said there were irregularities in voter list, hence it was discarded. Devre, represented by counsel Rajkumar Awasthi, said he would challenge the decision before the Supreme Court after seeing HC’s reasoned order, which is awaited. Last date for finalising voter list is February 26, 2024. tnn
