MUMBAI: Several local adivasi (tribal) residents of Aarey colony, along with some green activists, demonstrated at Picnic Point to 'Save Aarey Forest', and condemned the state government for illegal felling of trees inside Aarey.
The protesters reiterated their demand of shifting the Metro-3 car shed out from Aarey to Kanjurmarg in order to save the eco-sensitive green area.
Slogans such as 'Save Aarey, Save Mumbai' and 'Sarkar humse darti hai, police ko aage karti hai (Government is scared of us, and hides behind the police)' rent the air.
"We condemn the illegal manner in which trees continue to be destroyed. A car shed inside Aarey would mean almost the entire green zone of Aarey will be lost forever," said environmentalist D Stalin of the Vanashakti NGO. "This is a Rs 60,000 crore Aarey Forest Land Scam run by builders lobby," he added.
