Maharashtra minister Bhujbal hospitalised with fever, throat infection

Maharashtra minister Chhagan Bhujbal was on Thursday hospitalised after he fell ill. A statement issued from his office said Bhujbal was in Pune to attend Prime Minister Narendra Modi's function, which was cancelled. The state minister for food and civil supplies complained of fever and throat infection and rushed back to Mumbai, after which he was admitted in Bombay Hospital, it said. His health is stable and people should not believe in rumours, the statement added. PM Modi's visit to Pune on Thursday was cancelled due to heavy rains in the past 24 hours. Modi was to flag off metro rail services from District Court to Swargate in Pune and launch development projects costing Rs 22,600 crore.

Following Wednesday evening's downpour four people were injured in Bhandup area.

The first incident at 2.01 am occured on Thursday when a portion of a wall of a house near Gayatri Vidyamandir on Bhandup Pipeline road crashed. Out of four people who were rescued by the fire brigade, three were sent to Siddhi Hospital in Bhandup for treatment. Out of the three who were being treated, two have been discharged while one person is still admitted, the BMC informed.

The three who were admitted were Kranti Patole, 26 and Sheela Patole, 45 both of whom have been treated and discharged. Meanwhile Surendra Patole, 56 is still admitted.

The BMC has launched a high-level inquiry after a 45-year-old woman, Vimal Gaikwad, drowned in a collapsed stormwater drain near SEEPZ gate number 8 in Andheri East around 9:30 PM.

Gaikwad was rescued by the Mumbai Fire Brigade and taken to Cooper Hospital, where she was declared dead at 11:40 PM.

Municipal Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani has tasked a three-member committee, led by Deputy Municipal Commissioner (Zone 3) Devidas Kshirsagar, to submit a report within three days. The committee also includes Chief Fire Officer Ravindra Ambulgekar and Chief Engineer (Vigilance) Avinash Tambewagh.

According to a BEST official speaking to news agency PTI, 28 buses, including seven hired from private contractors, broke down due to waterlogging on Wednesday.

However, buses have been operational since morning as the city gradually recovers from the heavy rainfall.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Pune on Thursday has been cancelled amid heavy rainfall affecting the city. On Wednesday, Pune experienced 131mm of rain, with the majority falling in just three hours, marking the highest 24-hour September rainfall in 86 years. The previous record was set on September 21, 1938, with 132.3mm. Final rainfall figures starting from 8:30am on Wednesday are expected to be released on Thursday and may surpass the 1938 record.

Parts of Mumbai experienced over 200mm of rainfall between 5 pm and 10 pm on Wednesday, according to data from the civic body’s automatic weather stations. Powai recorded 234mm, Ghatkopar 259mm, and Mankhurd 276mm, marking the highest rainfall in the city during this period.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD), which had initially issued an orange alert for Wednesday, raised it to a red alert for Mumbai, Thane, and Raigad until 8:30 am on Thursday, predicting extremely heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds in isolated areas.

For the remainder of Thursday, the IMD has downgraded the warning to an orange alert, signaling a high probability of heavy to very heavy rain and thunderstorms at some locations.

In the 12 hours leading up to 8:30 pm on Wednesday, the IMD’s Colaba station recorded 70.4mm of rain, while Santacruz observed 94.9mm.

On Wednesday, Shivajinagar broke its 86-year September rainfall record, with the IMD station recording 131 mm of rain. Most of the downpour occurred within a three-hour window, from 2:30 pm to 5:30 pm. The final 24-hour rainfall tally, from 8:30 am Wednesday to 8:30 am Thursday, is expected to surpass 132.3 mm, the all-time September high set in 1938.

SD Sanap, an IMD scientist, explained that the combination of heat, moisture from the Arabian Sea, and a cyclonic circulation over southern Chhattisgarh led to the formation of tall cumulonimbus clouds by 3 pm. The intense rainfall over a short period caused significant waterlogging and traffic disruptions. Due to the forecast for more heavy rain, all schools and colleges in Shivajinagar and Pimpri-Chinchwad will remain closed on Thursday.
