Mumbai’s Bellasis flyover rebuilt in 15 months, opens four months early

The reconstructed Bellasis flyover was opened to traffic after being rebuilt in a record 15 months and six days. The project was completed four months ahead of schedule, marking a major milestone for infrastructure in south Mumbai.

The newly rebuilt structure has been renamed as Punyashlok Ahilyadevi Holkar flyover. The renaming gives the crucial east-west connector a new identity while retaining its importance in the city’s traffic network.

The flyover connects Mumbai Central, Nagpada and Tardeo, serving as a vital east-west corridor. Its reopening is expected to significantly ease congestion and improve traffic flow in the busy Mumbai Central area.

Though the tender timeline allowed more time, the reconstruction was completed four months ahead of schedule. Officials attributed the early finish to meticulous planning and round-the-clock execution.

The reconstruction was carried out under close supervision, with continuous monitoring to ensure quality control, structural safety and adherence to timelines despite logistical constraints.

The rebuilt flyover features upgraded structural components designed for improved durability and load-bearing capacity, ensuring safer and smoother travel for motorists.

The BMC credited strong coordination between its bridges department, the Railways, local ward office and traffic police for smooth execution and early completion of the project.
