Police arrested Manojkumar Jait (33), Mahendra Chandanmal Jaat (23) and Prashant Choudhary and have recovered part of the booty consisting of gold ornaments and diamond-studded jewellery worth Rs1.7 crore, and are looking for the remaining booty, which is believed to be with the two absconding accused.

On Tuesday, while Hariram Ghotia, an employee of Nardi Jewellers from Hyderabad was on his way to Mumbai in a luxury bus carrying gold worth Rs2.6 crore when four people intercepted him at Sion, posing as cops and bundled him into an Innova.

They took him and his accomplice Choudhary to Bhiwandi, where they robbed him and fled with the booty. An FIR of robbery against unknown persons was filed. The accused while fleeing even took away Ghotia’s mobile phone along with them and were unable to switch it off, which helped police trace its location to Churu in Rajasthan, from where police picked up an accused, who then spilled the beans on the others.

The accused told police that Choudhary, a distant relative of Ghotia, gave them a tip-off of the gold being ferried, said Prashant Kadam, DCP (zone IV).
