Somaiya Vidyavihar University signs MoU with Montclair State University, expanding global horizons in learning and research
MUMBAI: In a move that signals its growing global footprint, Somaiya Vidyavihar University (SVU) has signed a landmark memorandum of understanding with Montclair State University (MSU), New Jersey. The partnership will open new pathways in academics, research, and industry-linked projects, reinforcing SVU’s vision of creating global-ready graduates.
Montclair State, one of the US’s leading public research universities with a reputation for international engagement, already has roots in the Somaiya ecosystem. Its collaboration with K J Somaiya Nursing College and the flash consultancy project with K J Somaiya Institute of Management (KJSIM) laid the foundation. In that project, MBA students from MSU and KJSIM jointly designed a three-month go-to-market strategy for ProKlean Technologies, a green chemistry company. Working across time zones, the students learned the hard realities of international business — aligning strategy with sustainability, navigating cultural differences, and testing their classroom theories against real-world expansion challenges.
Building on this, the MoU now formalises a wider collaboration. Students and faculty from both universities will exchange knowledge across management, nursing, and allied disciplines. The two institutions will co-develop research and experiential learning projects, particularly in health care, sustainable business practices, and management. Academic programs and workshops will be rolled out, including initiatives to help nursing students prepare for international licensure exams such as the NCLEX, creating a direct bridge to professional opportunities in the US.
The agreement was signed by Prof. Nandkumar Gilke, Registrar of SVU; Dr. Jonathan Koppell, President of Montclair State University; and New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy, in the presence of Mrs. Amrita Somaiya, Trustee of Somaiya Vidyavihar, and Dr. Satyendra Upadhyay, Director of International Relations at SVU.
“This MoU reflects our vision of nurturing global-ready professionals,” said Prof. V. N. Rajasekharan Pillai, Vice Chancellor of SVU. “It strengthens ties with an institution of global repute while giving our students opportunities to engage in international research, innovation and leadership.”
Montclair’s president, Jonathan GS Koppell, called it a timely collaboration. “As an R2 research institution, we are well positioned to partner with SVU to address workforce needs in life sciences and health care, particularly the acute demand for licensed nurses. Together we can improve patient outcomes while preparing students for careers that matter.”
For SVU, the agreement is another step in crafting an academic ecosystem that is both deeply Indian and unmistakably global. Its commitment to holistic education, international linkages, and student development ensures that this is not just an institutional partnership, but a promise of shaping futures that span continents.
