Two Metro corridors to have ‘bamboo stations’ soon

Mumbai: Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (NMRDA) decided to set up bamboo-based stations on two Metro corridors as a pilot project to encourage ecofriendly and sustainable development. MMRDA received an in-principle approval for this plan at the authority meeting chaired by chief minister Eknath Shinde on March 11.As per the pilot, all finishing work at the stations will be done with the environment friendly bamboo. For instance, bamboo will be used for flooring, wall panelling, ceiling, frames for doors and windows. Apart from being environmentally-friendly, bamboo has better sustainability. Metropolitan commissioner S V R Srinivas said, “We are going to identify two stations each on Metro 4, Metro 2B or Metro 5.”Bamboo is the newest technology in the field of engineered wood products. Apart from being easy to clean and maintain to clean and maintain. it is dimensionally stable minimizes the weathering effect. Since bamboo is compressed it has a higher density than most wood types, and is therefore more fire resistant.
