MYSURU: Five college students including two girls died on the spot after their car was hit by an oncoming truck near Chikkinduvadi village in Kollegala taluk, Chamarajanagar on Saturday.
According to the police, the deceased have been identified as Likitha, Srilakshmi, Suhas, Shreyas and Nithin, all aged 21-22 year. All three boys were residents of Mandya and two were studying engineering courses while one, Nithin, was a diploma student. The girls were residents of Mysuru, and studying engineering courses, in private colleges.
The accident happened when they were travelling to MM Hills to attend Shivarathri Jathra Mahotsava, in a car.
Chamarajanagar Superintendent of Police BT Kavitha confirmed that the accident occurred on a narrow bund road at Chikkinduvadi around 9 am on Saturday. The negligent truck driver was speeding. As a result, the accident has happened. Both the car and truck rolled on and toppled upside down on roadside agriculture fields.
Kollegala rural police said all five students died on the spot while the truck driver escaped with minor injuries.
DIGP MB Boralingaiah, who is head of Mysuru Southern police range, and Chamarajanagar Superintendent of Police BT Kavitha visited the spot.
Kollegala Sub-division Deputy Superintendent of Police M Dharmendra has been directed to investigate the case.
