Declining sex ratio in Mandya district raises alarm
Mandya: A worrying trend of declining sex ratio due to female foeticide is being observed in Mandya district and other parts of the state. Currently, the ratio stands at 930-940 females per 1,000 males, falling short of the optimal range of 970-980 females. This critical situation led to the inclusion of a dedicated seminar on female foeticide at the 87th All India Kannada Sahitya Sammelana, which will be held in Mandya from Dec 20 to 22.Public education initiativeThe forthcoming seminar at the All India Kannada Sahitya Sammelana intends to highlight the societal and health-related impacts of female foeticide. This programme aims to stimulate public discussion and advocate for stronger implementation of relevant laws. The inclusion of this topic at a significant literary gathering demonstrates the authorities' commitment to reaching wider audiences and emphasising the importance of gender equality.Strong gender preferences A notable pattern emerges in family planning decisions, where parents expecting a second child show strong gender preferences. Following the birth of a daughter, numerous couples seek illegal sex determination services before pregnancy registration. Unauthorised practitioners provide these prohibited services, frequently resulting in pregnancy terminations when female foetuses are identified.Dr Bettaswamy, district family welfare officer, Mandya district, said, "Those women who delay reporting pregnancies until 14 weeks or later often do so after confirming the foetus's sex. This practice, especially when performed by unqualified individuals, poses serious health risks. Over 50% of Indian women suffer from anaemia, which makes them particularly vulnerable during unsafe abortions, often resulting in severe blood loss. Abortions conducted by unqualified persons can lead to long-term reproductive health issues and pose problems for the next child."Officials have initiated legal proceedings against unauthorised practitioners involved in unlawful sex determination and female foeticide activities. Several arrests were made, yet the declining sex ratio continues to be a problem.Blurb - A notable pattern emerges in family planning decisions, where parents expecting a second child show strong gender preferences.
