Cheluvarayaswamy mourns Veeragase exponent Mahadevappa
Mandya: Former minister N Cheluvarayaswamy Thursday expressed grief over the demise of renowned Veeragase exponent, Karnataka Rajyotsava Award recipient and senior folk artiste Mahadevappa of Nagamangala taluk, calling his death an irreparable loss to Karnataka’s folk and cultural heritage.
In his condolence message, Cheluvarayaswamy said he was deeply shocked and saddened by the death of the veteran artiste who dedicated more than five decades to preserving and promoting the Veeragase art form.
Mahadevappa was not only the pride of Mandya district but also one of Karnataka’s most respected ambassadors of folk culture.
“Mahadevappa was not merely an artiste; he was an institution in himself. The rhythmic beats of his damaruga, the vigour of his dance and his captivating expressions enthralled audiences for generations. His demise has created a void that will be difficult to fill,” he said.
For decades, lakhs of visitors witnessed his energetic performances during the Dasara festivities, making him one of the festival’s most recognisable folk artistes.
His appearances in the Mysuru Dasara procession and cultural programmes showcased Karnataka’s rich folk traditions to national and international audiences.
Despite financial hardships, he remained devoted to his art and trained hundreds of disciples, ensuring the continuity of the centuries-old Veeragase tradition. His performances at Mysuru Dasara, Hampi Utsav and major folk festivals across the state won widespread acclaim.
Recalling that the state govt had honoured him with the Karnataka Rajyotsava Award, Cheluvarayaswamy urged the govt to provide all possible assistance to the artiste’s family and institute a folk award in Mahadevappa’s name.
