Foresters launch first gaur relocation operation
Chikkamagaluru: The forest department on Friday launched an operation to relocate gaurs from Koppa Estate in Koppa, marking the first such exercise in South India. However, no gaur was rescued and relocated on Day 1.
The team, led by Chikkamagaluru conservator of forests Yashpal Kshirsagar and Koppa deputy conservator of forests Shivashankar, launched the drive at Koppa Estate.
Although gaurs were sighted, the team could not rescue them due to tough terrain and technical reasons, officials said.
“This operation is the first-of-its kind in South India. It needs careful planning to ensure the safety of both the bison and staff,” said an officer. “The first day went as per plan and no untoward incidents were reported,” confirmed the officer.
Officials are confident of rescuing gaurs on Saturday. Veterinarians Dr Ramesh and Dr BC Chittiappa are part of the team. The department said the operation is also experimental.
According to the officials, sedating gaur is a complex and serious procedure and not a simple task. It required expertise to balance effectiveness. “For the first time, we have taken up the exercise and thus we need to be cautious,” said an officer.
