Jayadeva Mysuru to expand capacity with new 200-bed block
Mysuru: The announcement of an additional Rs 180 crore for the Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences, Mysuru unit, in chief minister Siddaramaiah's 17th budget has come as a major relief for heart patients in Mysuru and neighbouring districts of southern Karnataka.Following the allocation, the hospital management has planned to construct a new three-storey block to add 200 more beds to the existing 400-bed facility. Since its inception, the Mysuru unit of Jayadeva has screened and treated 16 lakh heart patients.
The state recorded 6,943 deaths due to heart attacks between Jan and May 2025. On average, 1,388 people die each month from cardiovascular disorders in Karnataka. The highest number of fatalities among people below 45 years has been reported in the state. In the Mysuru region, Hassan district alone reported 507 heart-related deaths in the past two years.Although Jayadeva's Bengaluru, Mysuru and Kalaburagi units together have more than 1,600 beds, the demand continues to rise annually due to the growing number of patients suffering from heart ailments. With an 8% increase in heart-related cases in Mysuru and adjoining districts over the past year, the announcement of the hospital's upgradation has come as a significant boost for the region. The new three-storey block is expected to ease pressure on the Bengaluru unit and improve patient access to specialised cardiac care. Currently, the Mysuru unit handles 800–1,200 outpatients a day and treats around 400 in-patients. The expansion will increase capacity by an additional 200 beds.Speaking to TOI, Dr B Dinesh, director of the Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Research Centre, Bengaluru, said construction of the new 200-bed facility had already begun on the vacant land available on the Mysuru campus. The building will house a cath lab, operation theatres, wards and other essential infrastructure. He said the rising number of cardiac patients in Mysuru and surrounding districts in recent years has forced many to wait for beds. The new facility will help ensure timely, hassle-free treatment and also create employment opportunities for local residents.Get the latest lifestyle updates on Times of India, along with Women's day wishes, messages and quotes !
