Leopard death on NH-169: Rider’s statement still not recorded after a month
Shivamogga: Even a month after a sub-adult leopardess was mowed down by a high-end racing motorcycle on NH-169 near Sakrebailu Elephant Camp, the forest department is yet to record the statement of the accused.
The incident occurred within the eco-sensitive boundaries of Settihalli Wildlife Sanctuary and has sparked outrage among local conservationists, who allege administrative complacency, procedural delays, and a lack of intent by local forest officers to prosecute violators under the Wildlife Protection Act.
On May 11, a four-year-old leopardess was killed on the spot near the 15th Mile marker on NH-169 when a speeding racing motorcycle struck the animal. Following the accident, Sakrebailu Wildlife Range authorities seized the vehicle under statutory provisions.
Prasanna Krishna Patgar, deputy conservator of forests (DCF), Shivamogga wildlife division, denied any deliberate leniency but acknowledged the delay.
“The delay in recording the statement is because the accused is bedridden following injuries from the crash and has not appeared before the investigating team,” DCF Patgar said.
The DCF dismissed allegations of a soft stance towards the accused and said there will be absolutely no relief under any circumstances.
“We will strictly impose all relevant provisions of the Wildlife Protection Act and take the investigation to its logical conclusion.”
Another leopard found dead
On Wednesday (June 10), a leopard was found dead in the forest area of Sidli village under the jurisdiction of Soraba range of the Sagar forest division. There were no external injuries. Visceral samples have been sent to the laboratory, Sagara forest division’s DCF Mohammad Fayajuddin informed TOI.
