Besa’s ₹2.3Cr ‘Smoke-Free’ Crematorium To Open Soon
Nagpur: The Besa–Pipla Nagar Panchayat has completed work on a ‘smoke-free' crematorium near Besa–Manewada Road at a cost of ₹2.3 crore. The facility is set to be inaugurated soon by panchayat president Kirti Badole.Officials said emissions from cremation will be routed through exhaust pipelines into in-built water tanks attached to each dome, instead of being released directly into the air. The system is designed to trap particulate matter in water, sharply reducing visible smoke and environmental impact. Chief officer Bharat Nandanwar said the treated water can then be safely disposed of or reused for non-potable purposes such as cleaning.According to officials, cremation services will remain free, with no additional financial burden on residents. The panchayat has also proposed an LPG-based cremation facility, pending state govt approval. The completed work significantly expands capacity. Established in 2004 with a single platform, the facility now has multiple pedestals, enabling simultaneous cremations and reducing waiting time for families. The project also addresses long-standing sanitation concerns. Until two years ago, the site had deteriorated into a dumping ground with accumulated waste. Following public complaints, the panchayat carried out a clean-up drive, cleared debris, and restored the premises. A dedicated sanitation pathway has been added to improve access and hygiene. With improved pollution control, higher capacity, and better upkeep, the crematorium is expected to offer a more efficient and dignified service while addressing concerns over air quality and sanitation.
