Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis announced in the assembly that BJP state president Chandrashekhar Bawankule will chair the committee.

“The panel will present its report in the next assembly session, scheduled in Mumbai in February-March 2025,” Fadnavis stated. He also mentioned that the legislative council had already approved sending its representatives for the review.

The bill, which aims to counter the growing influence of Naxalism, particularly in urban areas, proposes stringent measures to dismantle urban hideouts and curb Maoist activities. Fadnavis emphasized that Maoist groups were trying to erode public trust in constitutional governance and provide cover for armed cadres. The bill is based on recommendations from the Maharashtra Anti-Maoist Squad.

Introduced during the monsoon session earlier this year, the bill failed to secure approval due to concerns about its scope and implications. In response to public apprehensions, the CM assured earlier this week that the bill would be sent to the select committee for thorough deliberation.

Fadnavis also reiterated the urgency of the legislation to maintain public order and address Maoist-linked threats. He added that the revised draft, after review, will be brought back for discussion in the July session.
