Chimur’s 1st gold medal, PhDs for lecturer-daughter-in-law in NU’s 104th convocation

gold

medal, a math’s lecturer and his daughter-in-law, and a mother-daughter duo were among the 57,259 degree recipients during the 104th convocation ceremony of

Nagpur University

(NU) at Suresh Bhat Auditorium on Sunday.

The MA student Ashwini Chacharkar is a student of Vasantrao Naik Institute of Social Sciences and Arts. She bagged seven gold medals and one silver. Ashwini, a native of Shankarpur village, belongs to a poor family as both her parents are farm labourers. Her studies were funded by her brother’s friends.

lecturer Subodh Deshpande (57) shared the joy of being awarded PhD in Mathematics along with his daughter-in-law Aparna Vaidya, who got it in Chemistry. Aparna is working in National Chemical Laboratories in Pune. Her husband Sameer Deshpande is an IT engineer and the couple has two kids. Both, Subodh and Aparna had registered in 2010 for their respective doctoral programmes.

Another relative-duo, a mother-daughter who refused to be identified for personal reasons, were among the degree recipients.

GH Raisoni Law School’s BALLB student Sahil Dewani bagged the top position with 20 medals followed by BSc student Nisha Khotele of Dhote Bandhu Science College with 16 medals and

Babasaheb Ambedkar Law College LLB

(three year) student Sheetal Wasnik (14 medals).

Earlier, 41 PhD recipients from Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics and six from Civil engineering were baffled when dean of science and technology faculty HD Juneja skipped two pages of the booklet while proposing their names for conferment of the degree. The glitch was immediately pointed out by officials of academic section and PhD cell. The director of Board of Examinations and Evaluation Neeraj Khaty took the permission of Vice Chancellor SP Kane and the 47 names were read out by Juneja at the end of the ceremony.

AICTE chairman Anil Sahasrabudhe was the chief guest. Pro-VC Pramod Yeole, registrar Puran Meshram, finance and accounts officer Raju Hiwase, dean of humanities Shrikant Komawar, dean of commerce and management Vinayak Deshpande, dean of interdisciplinary studies Rajashree Vaishnav, and chancellor’s nominee in management council Milind Barahate were present.

In his address, Sahasrabudhe said, “There is no end to education and the process must continue lifelong. You are privileged to be part of this esteemed university. The experience and learning gained here would stay with you forever. This knowledge must be utilized for economic and social development. Knowledge is of no use until it benefits society.”

The AICTE chairman also advised students to ensure they maintain good health. “Health is our wealth. To succeed in life, one has to be healthy. You can achieve any goal in life if you have a health body and mind.”
