‘Despite Flak, Backing Bombay HC Judge For SC Proved Right’
Nagpur: Former Chief Justice of India, Bhushan Gavai, on Saturday said he faced considerable criticism for recommending judges from Bombay high court for elevation to the Supreme Court, but maintained that subsequent developments vindicated his decision. He specifically referred to appointment of justice AS Chandurkar to SC. "Looking back, the decision I took was correct. That has been proved over the past year. Justice Chandurkar has demonstrated through his work that the decision was perfectly justified," Gavai said. Justice Gavai was speaking at the inauguration of a mural of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar and the renovated Central Hall at Nagpur bench of Bombay high court premises. Reflecting on significance of the Dr Ambedkar mural, the former CJI said it would serve as a constant reminder of values enshrined in the Constitution and ideals championed by him. He also recalled how India's first President, Rajendra Prasad, had praised Dr Ambedkar's contribution to drafting the Constitution. He also lauded role of PWD in renovating judicial infrastructure. He noted while govt agencies are often criticised for shortcomings, good work should also be acknowledged. Recalling his tenure as a senior judge of Bombay HC, he said a meeting with chief minister Fadnavis, senior officials had resulted in swift approval of judicial infrastructure projects. "At one such meeting, we informed him 26 crore was required for renovation. He sanctioned the funds within minutes," he said. Expressing gratitude to legal fraternity and court staff, Justice Gavai said he was touched that the affection and respect he received had remained unchanged even after demitting office.Administrative Judge of Nagpur Bench, Anil Kilor, said the renovation project was undertaken to restore the grandeur of the court's historic entrance while preserving its architectural heritage. He added that the Dr Ambedkar mural and displays highlighting the Constitution and Constituent Assembly would inspire visitors to uphold constitutional values and fundamental rights. He also commended sculptor Omkar Kate for his work on the mural.Acting chief justice of the Bombay High Court, Ravindra V Ghuge, described the high court building as a historic poem set in stone and stated that the renovated hall and Ambedkar mural would stand as enduring symbols of justice, equality, and constitutional morality.Recently appointed Supreme Court judge Shree Chandrashekhar reflected on the rich legacy of the Bombay HC and stressed that the judiciary must remain committed to serving society, particularly the underprivileged. Justice Chandurkar too praised the modernisation of the iconic structure while ensuring the preservation of its architectural heritage.(Inputs by Avani Jog)
