Nagpur: Deployment of high-capacity harvester machines at Ambazari Lake has finally given a major push to long-pending battle against massive spread of water hyacinth, with Nagpur Municipal Corporation launching an aggressive lake-cleaning drive aimed at restoring the city's iconic water body before the monsoon.
Since last week, the cleanup work has been underway with the help of advanced harvester machines specially deployed in the lake.
To accelerate removal of water hyacinth from the lake, the civic body has also deployed five Pokland machines, two JCBs and several tippers along with two advanced harvesters. Officials said the new machinery is expected to significantly speed up the mission to make Ambazari Lake free from invasive aquatic weeds.
The harvester machine is considered an environmentally-friendly solution for controlling water hyacinth, excessive aquatic vegetation and other invasive plants in large water bodies. These advanced machines are highly efficient in managing both submerged and floating vegetation.
The machines were procured under environmental protection and pollution control component of Pradhan Mantri Khanij Kshetra Kalyan Yojana and District Mineral Foundation, Nagpur. Each machine is capable of removing around 4.5 to 5 tonne water hyacinth in a single operation and can clear nearly one to two acres area daily.
Mayor Neeta Thakre, standing committee chairperson Shivani Dani-Wakhare and municipal commissioner Vipin Itankar jointly inspected the ongoing work on Thursday. Corporator Yogesh Pachpor and NMC superintending engineer Shweta Banerjee were also present during the inspection.
Officials believe deployment of these advanced machines will help restore the natural beauty of Ambazari Lake and free the lake from the growing menace of water hyacinth.
