Maharajbagh zoo on alert over CDV and bird flu scare

Nagpur: Authorities at Maharajbagh Zoo have sounded a high alert following recent tiger deaths linked to suspected canine distemper virus (CDV) in Kanha National Park and outbreaks of bird flu reported from different parts of the country. As a precautionary measure, zoo officials have intensified biosecurity protocols across the premises. Disinfection drives were carried out in bird enclosures, while the entire zoo campus was sanitised to prevent any possible spread of infection.Officials said special attention is being paid to carnivorous animals, particularly big cats and other vulnerable species. To minimise the risk of transmission of pathogenic viruses, poultry meat has been temporarily withdrawn from the diet of carnivores, and alternative feed arrangements have been made. Zoo authorities said veterinary teams have been instructed to remain vigilant for any symptoms related to CDV or avian influenza. Entry and handling protocols for staff have also been tightened.
