Open pit from damaged storm drain, sewer line poses risk at Bharat Nagar Sq
Nagpur: Residents of Bharat Nagar on Amravati Road have flagged safety concerns after a damaged storm water drain and sewer line in the locality have remained unrepaired for nearly two months. The stretch was dug up for repair work but has since been left incomplete, resulting in a large open pit that poses a significant threat to pedestrians and motorists. 03:15
The affected spot, located along the busy Amravati road frequently used by residents, shopkeepers, schoolchildren and commuters, has become a cause of anxiety for the neighbourhood. With steady vehicular movement and heavy footfall throughout the day, locals fear that the chances of accidents have increased considerably. Residents said the situation becomes particularly dangerous during evening hours and peak traffic time when visibility is reduced and the area gets congested. Though temporary barricades and reflective tapes have been placed around the pit, many believe these measures are inadequate. Congress corporator Abhijeet Jha raised the issue with the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) and demanded that the concerned agencies expedite the repair work. Speaking to TOI, Jha said that despite multiple written memorandums and follow-ups with civic officials, permanent corrective action is yet to be taken. "It was upon my insistence that the authorities installed reflective tapes and barricades around the spot. Otherwise, it would have continued to be a complete death trap," Jha said. "However, beyond spot visits and assurances, no concrete steps have been taken to complete the work." A shopkeeper Dilip Teltumbde operating near the affected stretch said business has also been impacted due to the dug-up road. "Customers hesitate to stop here, especially at night. There is also a stench emanating from the pit that irritates us the whole day," he said. A college student who frequently visits nearby tea stalls and cafés with friends recalled a recent close call. "One of my friends almost fell inside while walking alongside the road. Fortunately, there are baricades now, but it is still risky, especially when there is heavy traffic flow," she said. Officials from NMC's Dharampeth zone were unavailable for comments.
